The forgotten giants of Indian Science:JC BOSE and DM BOSE(Part 1)

JAGADISH CHANDRA BOSE

In the latter part of 19th century India, and Bengal,in particular gave rise to many intellectual giants, one of them was Jagadis Chandra Bose.Born in a bengali hindu family on 30th November 1858 he was a real polymath, being knowledgable in fields of Physics,Biology,Botany,Archaeology and even wrote science fiction!
He graduated from St. Xaviers College,Calcutta and went on to University of London to study medicine but it was cut short owing to health problems. He returned to India and joined the prestigious Presidency College as professor of physics.
His most famous research was into the study of short-waves.We can get the idea of his intelligence from the fact that he was years ahead of his time in realising that semi-conductors can be used in communication. He had used Galena(PbS)to produce short-waves.But alas!,his apathy to all forms of patenting caused Signor Marconi taking a march over him and being known as the inventor of radio. But years later IEEE corrected this(see this link)and he is known as the real "Father of Wireless Technology".
Apart from that his researches into plant stimuli gave the scientific community the idea that plants too have sensory capabilites. His invention 'Crescograph' is a milestone in this direction.
He was the founder of experimental science in the Indian Sub-continent.His research institution 'Bose Institute(Bose Bigyan Kendra)' is now internationally renowed.
He was the first Indian to get US patent in 1904

After a long time.........

After a long time I have started writing off something for my blog.I was pretty much occupied by pursuing my personal goals that I had little time to pursue the smaller pleasures of writing.
I hope readers won't take offence to it..😆
